EMR PHR & Hockey

Day 3 of the course saw John Glaser leaving and John Halamka taking over.

Fascinating discussions on how to drive adoption. Dr Marjorie Bessel from Banner Health in Arizona provided great information on how their system implemented their EMR, how they demonstrated the value of it, and how they plan to move forward. They did a benefits realization study a couple of years ago with my buddy Ben Wilson from Intel which demonstrated the value to their organization.

She was followed by Professor Warren McFarlan from the Harvard Business School. He gave us some great history lessons on how to drive implementation, including an introduction to the Bank of America’s first big computer project.

After lunch we heard Larry Markson talk about the implementation at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital and then a fascinating presentation by Kenneth Mandl on the future of the Personal Health Record. In light of Australia’s major investment in the PCEHR (Personally Controlled EHR) his work is very relevant to us.

Finally I got to experience some very local Boston Culture, visting “The Garden” to watch the Boston Bruins on the ice. Coming from Australia we don’t get to see Ice Hockey in real life. Having a beer, eating a hot dog and watching the hockey, and then coming home in a snow storm, I am starting to feel like a local.
